Would you consider being a volunteer?

In December 2021, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary as a wholly volunteer-run community Shop. We always need more volunteers to fill our 52 customer-serving rota shifts each month and help behind the scenes with a range of skills covering selecting / purchasing produce, looking after our financial IT systems, cleaning and premises maintenance.

From two or three shifts a week, to one a month, every little helps to keep our shop open to serve our customers.  We are always looking for new people of all ages to join our band of around 80 people who man the till.  All ages are welcome, from 14 upwards.  Training is provided, and volunteers and their families are invited to the free Annual Summer Barbecue and the Christmas Fish and Chip Supper.  All shop volunteers were rewarded with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service in the summer of 2017, in recognition of the importance of their role in providing service to the local community.

Graham and Yve Sharp say: "Being new to the village, volunteering at our village shop was a great way to help us meet our new neighbours, find out about village events and give something back to our community. We've made new friends quickly while doing something valuable for everyone in the village."

While Yve works in the Shop, Graham has joined the management committee, manages the shop website and helps with the purchase of new stock from Booker's cash and carry.

Of working in the Shop, Yve says "It is lovely to be part of such a valued asset to the village" while Graham adds "There are plenty things that can be done behind the scenes to help out. I'd recommend volunteering to anybody who can offer the time. There's never a dull moment!"
